Another year in the bag. Gotta say, this year was crazy for the sheer amount of work that I did. School and work combined, I made a ton of stuff. Rebrands, an app, posters, annual reports, dielines, and more. I spoke in classes and networking events. I guess that’s good. I supposedly should feel proud of myself but I mostly feel like I was a monkey at a keyboard who somehow wrote Shakespeare. I feel like that meme of a mulleted Michael Scott shaking Ed Truck’s hand. Like supposedly I accomplished all of these things, but in some sort of weird haze.
The more important things I accomplisehd are much more mundane, I think. I got to help make puppets for Freak Nature Puppets (I made a giant spider), I got into the habit of helping my Mom cook dinner every night from scratch, I finally got to go to a Kesha concert after loving her for DECADES, I got sick dip dyed hair, and I got to hang out a bunch with my friends and make memories.
☆ Graphic Design Work Updates:
I haven’t really done anything to be honest. I made a couple flyers as contract work for Club Nocturno, which I have an ongoing relationship with. I enjoy the opportunity to learn about new music, but usually the jobs are fast one off things. Anyway, I made enough money to pay for everyone’s Christmas gifts, so that is what’s most important.
I am applying for a lot of jobs, internships, and one fellowship for arts programming. The arts programming may be a little out of left field, but I want to learn how to organize events and sustainable communities. The people who I look up the most00 in graphic design are the people who use their professional knowledge to uplift others. That feels like the end goal for me professionally, so even though I don’t have a lot to offer right now, I think the skills I could learn from the fellowship might be helpful later on if I want to build some sort of community. Also, organizing events is probably a useful skill at every level, and certainly within the zine space.
I have a hard time imaging a future event where I am at the center of managing and guiding everyone, but I can think of a world where I simply make it easier for people to access the resources around Los Angeles. There’s so many great places to make and display art and I want people to know and use those spaces, connect with other people doing the same thing, and figure out things like how to do their taxes as an independent contractor. I would just be directing people like an air traffic controller but the people are planes, I guess, if we’re going with this metaphor. I don’t believe in putting resources behind a paywall or monetizing my help, I think I should give people help because people, in general, need help to get through life and that is the least I can do for them.
I don’t know. I like yapping about my work, but it’s not the most important thing this Christmas. The most important thing is spending time with my friends and family! We work to live, we don’t live to work.
☆ Zine Work Updates:
Officially registered for the IE Print and Zine Fest in March! I know it’s kind of out of the way (Inland Empire), but I think it could still be fun. I know and respect the people running the zine fest and know I am in good hands management-wise. Will the fest be worthwhile money wise? No idea, but I still want to check it out. I think I’ll get to see a lot of familiar faces and I’ll get to venture out of my comfort county. Registering for the fest comes with discounted open workshop time at Punch Kiss Press, which I’ve been meaning to visit for a bit. The only thing is that the workshop time is still $30 and doesn’t include the cost of printing. I don’t know if I have the funds for that right now, so I think I’ll have to wait until the month of the zine fest to decide. But I want to go and print with cool people.
☆ Other Updates:
Holidays!!! Christmas!!! I was able to buy gifts for all of my friends and family this year, which makes me really happy. I love making gifts and giving gifts to the people in my life. There’s something special about watching other people’s faces light up, especially when it’s something they don’t expect. I love making a friend who didn’t expect anything a small and personalized gift.
I am typing this on Christmas Day because my family got me a mechanical gaming keyboard for Christmas and I want to give it a test run. It’s buttery smooth and the keys make a fun click clacking sound as I type. I can change the back light colors and the keyboard itself is a light pink color that subtly sparkles. I didn’t know a keyboard could spark so much joy in me but it is!
Other things making me happy this week: I got a new dice set from a fellow D&D group member, my junk journal is almost full, I started making goals and such for 2026, I went to the ArtCenter grad show, and I went to a drag show last Friday with Leona. The drag show featured Willem, Meatball, and Rock M. Sakura. Everyone slayed; I gave out lots of dollars. We also ran into another ArtCenter person at the club, which was really funny. It’s nice seeing ArtCenter people in the context of, like, not panicking and being sweaty
Overall, I have so much to be thankful for. I may not be making very much money, and I may have sold my soul to a questionable higher learning institution, but my life is enjoyable. And I guess that’s what matters.
