Since we live in a bizarre, self-promoting, chronically online environment, I have this blog. The blog is a log for myself, so I can keep myself and anyone who wanders by updated on how I am girl bossing 24/7. Because I do keep myself busy and I need some record that it is paying off (or not!)

☆ Graphic Design Work Updates:

I haven’t been getting much in the way of freelance graphic design work recently, which is FUN because I GET TO NOT WORK. That aside, I am looking for, preferably, some freelance projects I can jump on until the summer. I’ve been applying to at least 1 job daily, as well as cold-emailing people who have job listings on sites that seem too sketchy to be true >.> I have job leads, but I need to follow up on them (ie bother people).

In terms of graphic design projects just for myself, I’ve been working on my ArtCenter packaging final that I didn’t finish in the spring of last year, due to health reasons. I’ve gotten the designs and measurements mostly figured out, so it’s just a matter of tweaking and fabricating now. I think continuing to work on this project gives me a good excuse to visit my old packaging professor and pick his brain. Fabrication is going to be a pain. I’ll probably need to utilize the ArtCenter laser lab, professional printing, and cut a ton of gold vinyl with my Cricut. I’ve decided that I’ll leave most of fabrication for the new year because the laser lab is probably crazy right now, and also it seems silly to throw money at a project when I should be throwing money into getting Christmas gifts for my friends and family!

☆ Zine Work Updates:

The last zine event I was signed up for had to be called off due to rain, so sadly, I am done for the year. It might be a nice goal next year to try to get my zines into as many independent bookstores as possible, so I can have more of a money cushion for this hobby. I’d say I’ve split even for the year, but by a pretty narrow margin. If I want to make a new zine, especially a Risograph printed zine, I’d better start saving up a bit.

I am proud of some of the new zines I’ve made this year. I made a zine about my grandma’s old house, which I sold at a couple of zine festivals. It didn’t get much traction, but I think it’s fine because it made me happy and most of the copies are probably going to my family anyway. I want to make some scans of the zine and post them on social media, because I worked so dang hard on this zine and I want people to know I’m still alive!

I also made some pretty huge edits to my religious trauma zine, such as binding with a chain stitch and creating a more Bible-esq layout. The new and improved design got a fair amount of attention, so I think this is a zine I might want to keep making. It would be great to make a couple more copies and shop it around along with my smaller zines.

Also! This month some of my Risograph art will be in the Supernova show at Junior High. I enter into the show almost every year, so it doesn’t feel like a big deal, but it kinda is! Having your art in a well-attended art show is actually pretty sick.

Other Updates:

The big thing I will not shut up about is the Chainsaw Man movie. That movie blew my damn mind, even though I saw the dubbed version at the cheapest theater in Pasadena Tuesday night. The animation was beautiful, the music was evocative, I was beyond entertained. Afterwards, I felt encouraged to make my own art, no matter how silly it was, because perhaps something as transcendentally beautiful could come out of what I slapped together. Certainly, Tatsuki Fujimoto’s bizarre work which included a chainsaw monster riding a six-eyed shark on legs could become something wonderful so why not?

The other great something that happened was that I inherited a new car! Well, an old car. A 2016 Honda Civic, which is old, but not nearly as old as the beat up 2006 Honda Civic I was driving before. This car has a rear view camera! And a much better miles per gallon ratio. My goal is to cover this new Honda Civic in bumper stickers, hopefully making me extra careful when backing up my car. I promptly used my new old car to go to the Coffee Bean drive thru and then a Jack-in-the-Box drive thru to satisfy my munchies. But I think that is just a special event to celebrate getting a new car.
