I started a system for myself where I can only drink matcha lattes if I exercise 3 times a week, and it’s been a sufficient motivator.
I haven’t logged anything on here for a bit! I’ve been pretty busy recently with work, in a good way. I still feel like there are large chunks of time where I don’t even know what I was doing, but I think that is simply my neurodivergence doing its thing. I seem to remember drawing a lot? I think I had a job interview that I was preparing for? I was doing volunteer work for the Clubhouse and Nova Community Arts? Who knows. I certainly don’t.
☆ Graphic Design Work Updates:
I’ve been doing a lot lately! The main project I’ve been working on is an illustration for the Stephen Wise Temple celebrating their annual Purim Carnival. It’s been really nice to do an illustration since drawing was my first love. I was able to adhere to my particular art style, which is bright watercolor-like drawings. The art went through a ton of corrections and redesigns, but I’m happy with how it turned out. I also learned that the best way to make a huge banner is to draw a bunch of smaller elements and then collage it together in Photoshop.
I also have a poster going for The Whole Child, for their Valentine’s Day Workshop. Again, I’ve started wanting to incorporate my drawings more into my graphic design, so I’m drawing a couple of the flyers. Should be a straightforward kind of job, although I do worry some of the things I’m trying for the flyers will be too weird. Lots of big pictures and small text layouts.
Finally, I have some artwork in general for the effort to use whistles as emergency ICE alerts. ICE is evil but a lot of people in Los Angeles have rallied around the cause of keeping our community safe. I feel a bit hopeful amidst the chaos seeing so many people have shown up. I personally have been trying to boycott businesses that are partnering with ICE, spreading information on social media, and buying groceries to give to neighbors who are unable to leave their homes due to the ICE activity. I wasn’t really able to donate much, but after working on the whistle poster, I used 75% of the money to donate to a combination of the Immigrant Defense Law Center in Los Angeles and various GoFundMe campaigns endorsed by mutual aid organizations. Fuck ICE. I hope my posters to arm people with whistles gets spread everywhere so that people can stay safe and can patrol effectively. I was thinking that once I get the go-ahead, I’ll print out a bunch of the posters I made at Staples and jars of whistles and go to all of the spots in the SGV ICE has been spotted. We protect us.
In all of the movement around ICE on social media, I haven’t really been posting much of my own stuff. I do need to get back on the ball at some point, but the situation with ICE keeps escalating and I find spreading information on how to stay safe is probably just more on my mind right now. Maybe when I have a week without work I’ll post more stuff promoting myself, but god, what a disaster. People getting shot and dying or going blind. Absolutely dystopian.
☆ Zine Work Updates:
Not much to report on here. I’ve been taking a bit of a break from zines because of all the graphic design work I’ve been doing. Plus, I have a fairly large stock of art at this point. I did open a shop on Big Cartel because Etsy was simply infuriating. I can only list 5 things on Big Cartel and I definitely filled up my 5 things quickly. But as a VERY small business owner it seems more suited to me. I was kind of freaking out about making the shop at first, but then I looked at other people’s shops and realized I didn’t have to have crazy aesthetics to have a decent storefront.
☆ Other Updates:
Boy, I did a lot these past couple weeks. I got really into Jazmin Bean, hemlocke springs, and Devon Again and have been blasting their music on Spotify. (Unfortunately, Spotify might have to go because of their involvement with ICE, but we’re figuring that out.)
My mom bought me cheese sticks to snack on because I kept on eating sandwich cheese out of the fridge because my family has a lack of actual snacks.
I watched the first part of Bridgerton season 4 on Netflix and I am fully obsessed. I feel like Bridgerton is one of those things I will drop everything to watch, even if I don’t participate much in the fandom.
I’ve been playing a lot of D&D with my friends and we’re getting to my character—a cleric half-elf— in terms of story arc.
Really, I’ve been eating a lot of pizza lately. Like I think I’ve had it 3 times in the past few weeks.
There have been many other good things happening, but I think those are the main things. Perhaps if I could give myself some feedback, I would like to have a more structured schedule so I’m not working on my freelance stuff at like 9pm. Also, I’ve truly volunteered for SO MANY THINGS. When I had no work it seemed like a sensible thing to do, but it’s kind of a lot now. I’m not sure what to do because I like volunteering with every organization, but my schedule is getting so packed.
Anyway, stay safe and fuck ICE!
